Now that the quartet of celebs have (almost) got the hang of manoeuvring their narrow boats, the emphasis shifts slightly from mishaps to relationships.
Debbie McGee is clearly comfortable sharing with “Admiral” Nigel Havers, giving him her late husband’s maritime cap to wear. And despite Simon Callow saying he and Lorraine Chase are “the oddest couple who ever lived”, partly because she has meltdowns for what he calls “Lorrainian” reasons, life on board is reasonably harmonious for them, too.
They’re travelling from Grindley Brook in Shropshire to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, meeting canal folk along the way. And now that there’s less crashing and squealing, the journey’s become much more relaxing.
Embarking upon the second of their aquatic ambles, Nigel Havers, Debbie McGee, Lorraine Chase and Simon Callow set out from Grindley Brook, England, to follow the Llangollen Canal to Wales. The trip allows them to go antique shopping in the Shropshire town of Whitchurch and explore an ice-age peat bog, where they sample medieval ale and bog herbs used by Viking berserkers. A later visit to nearby Ellesmere gives the stars access to a maintenance yard used by prominent canal architect Thomas Telford.
