You’ll want to file surgeon Gabriel Weston’s new series under the heading Some People are Incredible and I’m So Lucky To Share Their Planet. Not just the medical experts who think the unthinkable but the men and women with rare conditions and disabilities who seize life by the shoulders.
Like the man paralysed after breaking his back in a swimming accident who agreed to brain surgery as a means of being a guinea pig for a new treatment developed by an electrical engineer. The bearded lady who after a lifetime’s bullying decided that she would simply be proud of what made her different. And the woman with an incredibly rare condition that meant her body grows two skeletons who rallied other patients with the same condition to help research.
Then there’s the seven-year-old Russian girl whose heart grows outside her ribs. She’s spirited and indomitable. “I run, I’m not supposed to, but I love to run.”
Surgeon Gabriel Weston uncovers the workings of the human body, looking closely at case studies of individuals with extremely rare conditions. In the first edition, she meets seven-year-old Virsaviya, who was born with her heart on the outside of her ribcage, and Jeannie Peeper, who has a condition that sees her body growing an extra skeleton where there should be muscle.
