The Real Marigold Hotel

Series 2 - Episode 2

Review

You can see how this lot fulfilled the producer’s check list: Bill Oddie in the grumpy/eccentric Miriam Margolyes role, Rustie Lee as the group’s cook, Dennis Taylor as the easy-going sportsman and so on. But the aging celebs all have health issues and we’re spared little about Oddie’s impotence and depression, Lionel Blair’s distended stomach as a result of his prostate cancer treatment, and Amanda Barrie’s debilitating vertigo.

Nonetheless they’re such a good-natured bunch that you can’t help agreeing with Paul Nicholls when he says admiringly of his geriatric companions, who are all up for a laugh, “What an advert for old age!”

Summary

The celebrities continue to settle into life in their 16th-century mansion, and are brought closer together when they celebrate Amanda Barrie's 81st birthday together. Lionel Blair - who has struggled with a distended belly since having treatment for cancer - tries out a local alternative medicine in the hope of finding a solution to the problem. Bill Oddie goes in search of wildlife with a trip into the jungle, and opens up about how spending time in nature has helped him cope with mental-health issues.
