Binge Britain

Series 31

We rarely hang up the bunting for Casualty, but here’s RT’s equivalent of cake and prosecco to celebrate its recent, admittedly quite shocking, best drama award at the National Television Awards.

Yes, Casualty has been around for 30 years and it does what it does, nearly every Saturday night. This is a fairly typical episode, a mad accident of the week overlying the deep emotional stuff back in the emergency department.

But there is a touching story at its heart that’s been bubbling for a wee while, involving paramedic Iain and his troubled little sister Gemma (played with spiky gumption by Shameless’s Rebecca Ryan).

Iain and Gemma’s hopeless mother is briefly on the scene to establish she’s an alcoholic in hock to some bad people and her kids have done well to turn out as they have. And the mad accident of the week? Someone is shot with a bow and arrow.

Iain is unexpectedly reunited with his sister when he is called out to an emergency involving his mother, but his efforts to make amends for his past have unforeseen repercussions. The hospital is inundated with binge drinkers, including a hen party that has ended with the bride getting shot with a bow and arrow. Dylan struggles to cope, but the experience gives him an idea. Grace is back on a ward after her collapse and fit, but worryingly seems to have lost her ability to talk.
