What might otherwise be a ponderous, pretentious makeover show has a simple advantage: whereas most room-revamps banish the homeowner at the outset, this one makes its amateur designers consult the person who will live with the transformation.
In the first semi-final, that’s bad news for one nervous wild card contender, whose Bristolian client hates the dark colours and pointless vanity screen – never mind the obsession with chipboard.
Two doors down, a more dynamic designer looks to have this contest sewn up – unless their poor timekeeping or insistence on installing a white chaise longue brings them down.
It's the semi-final, where two designers compete for a place in the finale. In an added twist, one of the returning contestants has been given a second chance, a `wildcard' entry into the semi-finals, having been eliminated from the previous rounds. The competitors have 48 hours to transform a couple of rooms in modern Bristol town houses before Kelly Hoppen, Daniel Hopwood and guest judge Michelle Ogundehin decide who goes through to the next stage. Tom Dyckhoff presents.
