Review

Not exactly a cosy treat to warm a dark January evening, but if forlorn dispatches from the housing crisis have you plumping up the cushions, here’s a bonus: an unbroadcast episode of the documentary series Channel 4 was running in November, about letting agents who liaise between tenants on housing benefit and their landlords.

The emphasis is on troublesome renters who are leaving poor owners out of pocket: in Hull, a flat’s been abandoned, with £1,000 of damage to fix and curtains needed to replace the originals, which have vanished along with the tenant. In Grimsby, another occupant cleans up the mess he’s made, but repaying £3,000 in rent arrears will be more difficult.

Summary

Estate agency owner Jeremy and his wife are on the trail of a tenant who left their property in Hull with more than £1,000 worth of damage, and to add insult to injury, the landlord's curtains are also missing. Meanwhile in Grimsby, a letting agent receives a pleasant surprise when he finds a tenant has cleaned up mess at his property as promised, but will he pay up his rent arrears of more than £3,000?
