I used to think that when the medical staff on 24 Hours in A&E talked about how important a loved one’s presence was to a patient they were just being charmingly self-deprecating; “It’s not our top-notch medical care that sorts them out – it’s love!” Yeah, right.

But 12 series in and I’m starting to believe them. Of course that top-notch medical care is vital, but is there anything more soothing than having your hand held by someone you love and being told you’ll be OK?

That’s very much in evidence here, as a son supports his father after he’s hit by a pizza delivery motorbike, a 90-year-old man with a worryingly low heart rate reflects on 65 years of marriage and eight-year-old Clementina arrives at St George’s with a sore knee.

Cameras follow Mohammed, 64, who has been hit by a pizza delivery motorbike. Consultant Will is concerned that he may have a pelvic fracture, which could seriously affect his mobility and, if it hits a major artery, can be life threatening. There's also a profile of John, a 90 year old who comes to St George's in south west London with his wife Iris and daughter Joan after his GP picked up on his abnormally low heart rate.
