Levison Wood maintains that the dangers of an expedition, such as his current one walking from Mexico to Colombia, are grossly overstated. But as he and his local guide Alberto approach the most dangerous city in Central America – San Pedro Sula in Honduras – he’s rightly nervous.
Street signs are pockmarked with bullet holes, children’s playgrounds have armed guards and they need the protection of a local pastor to pass through the gang strongholds where he’s warned they’ll rip your tongue out if they don’t know who you are. Apart from that, everyone he meets is friendly and the countryside spectacular, although he’s not a fan of what he describes as the “bastard” hills.
The second leg of Levison Wood's four-month trek across Central America involves walking for 400 miles and travelling through three different countries. He visits a unique Caribbean town that is populated by the descendants of shipwrecked African slaves, treks through a mountain region, and makes his way through gang territories in one of the world's most violent cities.
