Review

Grinning young female dancers are performing a colourful routine in plastic macs and umbrellas to a chirpy pop number on the lawn of an Oxford college.

Meanwhile protesters, led by a Mary Whitehouse type figure, Mrs Joy Pettybon, are denouncing the goings-on as degenerate filth. Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) is bemused, particularly by the music, the product of top pop group the Wildwood.

But his thoughts are distracted by the discovery of a body in a pub loading bay, a young labourer who, it turns out, has links to the band.

Soon Morse is drawn into a shady world of acid trips, tuning in and dropping out. It’s a very leisurely tale with smatterings of jittery mysticism, though boss Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) has the measure of the young pop stars: “They are a rum lot and no mistake.”

Summary

The leader of a censorship campaign comes to Oxford on a speaking tour, and Morse is charged with protecting her in light of a series of death threats. A bricklayer working on a controversial pop singer's house is later found dead, and when a second killing occurs, a connection emerges to the speaker's movement, plunging Morse into the middle of a conflict over the nature of British culture.
