Just what is it that makes talent-show judges light up the “Star Way” or turn round their big red chair? It’s hard to tell sometimes, even though none of these hopefuls are as barrel-scrapingly awful as some X Factor contestants.
Still, Gary Barlow’s team, as promised, are warmly encouraging to all while Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc behave as if they’re everyone’s BFF. On ITV those faced with the rejecting backs of four chairs on The Voice have the chummy and supportive Emma Willis to console them.
While both shows got off to a mighty big start – Jennifer Hudson belting out Under Pressure with her fellow coaches and Barlow staging a rather cheesy but extravagant musical number – the jury’s out which one has more razzle dazzle.
The spinning-chair singing contest continues, as another selection of would-be stars put their musical skills to the test via the ears of new coach line-up Jennifer Hudson, Gavin Rossdale, Will.i.am and Tom Jones, who are tasked with selecting more acts to champion in the blind auditions. Sitting with their backs to the prospective pop-icons, the coaches select the ones they like based on their vocal abilities alone, but as always, it remains to be seen whether this batch of contestants will have what it takes to reach the end of the contest and claim that lucrative record contract with Polydor. Emma Willis is on hand to oversee proceedings.
