Review

Make no mistake, though there’s plenty of spy-camera gimmickry in this series from the innovative team led by John Downer, this is conventional natural history film-making of the very highest order – the mischievous sibling, if you like, to the rather more grown-up Planet Earth ll.

Animatronic creatures with tiny cameras as eyes are deployed within animal families to both observe and provoke behaviour. The crocodile mum who picks up a fake hatchling in her jaws, the robotic tortoise that finds itself the subject of attention from an amorous male will elicit both awe and amusement. But it’s the scene of collective grief among a troup of langur monkeys for what they assume to be a dead infant that will melt your heart.

Summary

Natural history documentary in which spy cameras camouflaged as various animals go `undercover' in the animal world, getting up close and personal to film their behaviour. Spy Pup is immersed in wild dog life to explore their maternal love, and Spy Penguin records the turbulent action of the mating season, as a male Adelie penguin falls victim to a pebble thief that ruins his chances of love for the season. Spy Tortoise and Spy Bushbaby keep watch on chimpanzees, while in perhaps the most moving scenes, Spy Monkey becomes the focus of attention for a troop of concerned langurs who believe the motionless camera-creature has died.
