Review

Andrew Jones and Michele Gibbons saw a For Sale board for an 85ft high 1938 art deco district council water tower in Cheshire go up at 8.30 one morning. By 9.15am they’d made an offer of £320,000 and sealed the deal. But that was just the start of a colossal project. With a budget of £400,000 the couple plan to install a lift (there are seven floors) and make the cavernous, echoing water tank at the very top into their living room.

When George Clarke turns up it all looks like an impossible dream, and as unprecedented rain pours into the gutted reinforced concrete building, morale dips. But by the end Clarke is, quite rightly, lost for words.

Summary

George Clarke meets Cheshire couple Andrew Jones and Michele Gibbons, who are planning to turn an 85ft art deco water tower into six-storey dream home. It proves an almighty challenge for the builders, who have to cut through double-reinforced concrete to build new floors and fit more than 20 new windows. However, as the contractors work on, the owners struggle to come to terms with their dislike of art deco furniture, realising they will need to furnish such a magnificent building in a fitting style.
