Yvonne Carmichael is a highly respected scientist, a geneticist who gives evidence to Parliamentary select committees. Her home life is the epitome of upper middle-class suburban London affluence centred around family suppers, recycling, supermarket deliveries, good wine and the calm pool of a happy marriage without a ripple on its surface.
But Yvonne (Emily Watson) is drawn into a powerfully erotic affair with a total stranger that begins in the House of Commons crypt, of all places. Her lover (we don’t know his name and neither does she) is handsome, charming and addicted to risky sex.
Amanda Coe makes a good job of adapting Louise Doughty’s bestselling psychological thriller, but it’s the two brilliant leads, Watson and Ben Chaplin, who bring this very adult drama fully to life as their sexual encounters thrum with passion. But one savage act will soon derail Yvonne, poisoning her present and her future.
Thriller based on Louise Doughty's novel about a scientist who begins a passionate affair with a stranger who reveals very little about himself, but who plays a mysterious role in the government. Their secret meeting in a backstreet has devastating consequences, as a violent incident threatens everything she holds dear. Starring Emily Watson and Ben Chaplin.
