Review

The upsurge of interest in choral singing across the UK (and the endorphin-boosting elation it engenders) is clear: this year more than 180 choirs entered this biennial competition. They’ve been whittled down to six finalists: four category winners (children, youth, adult and open) and two wildcards – a barbershop choir from Leeds and a male voice choir from Rhosllanerchrugog near Wrexham.

In the grand final at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre, they must impress a formidable panel of judges, including conductor Harry Christophers and soprano Danielle de Niese. On hosting duty are Josie d’Arby, Julian Ovenden and Lloyd Coleman.

Summary

Josie D'Arby and Julian Ovenden present highlights from the musical contest held at Cardiff's Millennium Centre. Lloyd Coleman reports from backstage and chats to the performers, who come from Jersey's Musical Originals Training Choir, Leeds' White Rosettes, Doncaster's Rainbow Connection Singers, the Rhondda Valley's Cor y Cwm, Rhosllanerchrugog's Johns' Boys and Newcastles' Voices of Hope.
