Dan Snow on Lloyd George: My Great Great Grandfather

Catch Up

Dan Snow is uncomfortable as a historian reads extracts from the passionate love letters between David Lloyd George and his mistress Frances Stevenson. Snow is Lloyd George’s great-great-grandson and he feels a conflict, listening to the honeyed words (“Now Pussy… help me… you possess my soul entirely”) of the man who was cheating on his great-great-granny.

Snow believes that Lloyd George has slipped from his rightful place in history. He had his faults – a serial womaniser and a shameless seller of honours – but he led Britain through the First World War with a focus and pragmatism that his predecessor Asquith lacked. In a fluent, personal documentary first shown on BBC Wales Snow tries to lift his relative’s reputation.

The presenter traces the story of his great-great grandfather David Lloyd George, who became prime minister 100 years ago and played a key role in creating victory for the Allies during the First World War.
