Review

Wait – are they saying Robbie Williams has achieved icon status? That’s a stretch, isn’t it? A wildly successful pop chancer, yes. A brilliant national show-off, certainly. But given that the only other people who have received this honorary Brit are David Bowie and Sir Elton John – does Robbie belong in that company?

Well, let’s not cavil but instead enjoy him enjoying his celebratory concert, at which the other members of Take That joined him on stage. At least Robbie has always been able to mock his own ego, as demonstrated in everything from the tiger codpiece on his pants that he just couldn’t resist showing off on stage to the lyrics of his new album’s title track, describing himself as “Eminem meets Barry Manilow” and pointing out, of icons, “All the best ones are dying off so quickly… enjoy me while you can.” Good advice.

Summary

To mark becoming only the third artist after David Bowie and Elton John to be awarded the Brits Icon award, Robbie Williams plays a special show at the Troxy in east London. The performance features many of the singer's hits, along with collaborations, highlights from his new album The Heavy Entertainment Show and many surprises, and Williams tells the story of his career in a series of film clips, which feature key individuals from his career including the members of Take That as well as Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue.
