Lawful Killing: Mark Duggan

Lawful Killing: Mark Duggan

On August 4, 2011 Mark Duggan was shot dead by police marksmen in north London. Two days later large areas of the capital and other parts of the country erupted in riots.

This dense, detailed documentary goes through the events leading up to Duggan’s death and the later response of the Metropolitan Police. Members of Mark Duggan’s family, including two of his sisters and his brother, and his partner, mother of three of his children, all contribute.

The family wants to know the nature of the intelligence police had on Mark Duggan and his movements, and why he was under scrutiny, though it’s unlikely they will ever be told. There remain contradictory versions of what happened when the minicab Duggan was travelling in was halted, though there’s a brutally succinct summary from a forensic investigator: “[Duggan] was stopped by armed police and he did a runner.”

Docudrama about the police shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham in August 2011, an incident that triggered the worst riots in modern British history, telling the story from the sometimes contradictory perspectives of many of those involved. Dramatised reconstructions of the 24 hours leading up to the shooting are combined with Interviews with Duggan's family and friends, journalists and experts, and testimony re-enacted from the transcripts of evidence given at the coroner's Inquest by witnesses and police officers.
