The titular ghosts in this authoritative documentary are the “unknown soldiers” left dead after the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, some of whom are finally being identified and returned to their families 75 years later.
Interestingly, the engine oil from destroyed warships has helped preserve their DNA – but sadly this process isn’t gone into much, as this is primarily another retelling of the now-famous routing of the US navy in Hawaii.
Still, interviews with weeping survivors, the mourning family of one long-missing soldier and another who wants his ashes scattered with his dead comrades remind us that this is not just a history lesson. For many, the tragedy of that day is still raw.
Documentary marking the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack that brought the US into the Second World War.
