Review

John Christie is a banal, prissy suburban snob. His apparently benign gaze is framed by distinctive, thick spectacles, and when he speaks it’s barely above a whisper.

But Christie (Tim Roth, who’s extraordinary and terrifying) is a voyeur, a sexual predator and a murderer. Tracey Malone and Ed Whitmore’s version of the sorry Christie tale begins with a striking sequence, the hanging of poor Timothy Evans (Nico Mirallegro), whose tragic story will unfold in next week’s episode.

It’s a chilling drama based on the events that took place in that infamous house, 10 Rillington Place, west London in the 1940s and 50s. As Christie takes his wife Ethel to their bleak new home (“It’s a very sought-after area”), it’s clear his talent for lies and self-delusion is boundless.

Ethel (the great Samantha Morton) soon starts to wonder what her husband gets up to in the front room at night.
