Review

The lonely death of ten-year-old Damilola Taylor in the dirty stairwell of a block of south London flats in 2000 revulsed the nation. Damilola, who’d arrived in Britain with his mum and siblings from their home in Nigeria, was a boisterous boy who loved football. The details of how he came to receive the grievous leg wound that killed him as he made his way home from computer club are still unclear.

This subtle film, written with anger and tenderness by Levi David Addai, will make you heartsore for Damilola’s family as their loved boy’s death tears into his parents Gloria and Richard (the fine Wunmi Mosaku and Babou Ceesay). The Taylors, who must fight for justice, slowly unravel as Richard, consumed by anger, turns inward while Damilola’s elder brother Tunde (Juwon Adedokun) feels he is being blamed by his dad. Addai doesn’t go easy on Richard, a proud and righteous man lost under crushing grief, and the drama deservedly won Baftas for best single drama and for the marvellous Mosaku.
