The Secret Life of the Zoo

Series 2-Episode 3

Series 2-Episode 3

Catch Up

Spring is a busy time for breeding at Chester Zoo, so there’s a lot of copulating in this edition. Spectacled bear Lima, however, isn’t keen on partner Bernie’s advances because her last cub died at birth. A little honey is needed to sweeten her mood.

There are 14 young additions on Penguin Island, including the delightfully named Munch. But not all penguins have good parenting skills. “We have to keep an eye on them – penguins don’t have Social Services,” says one keeper as some chicks struggle to thrive. Meanwhile, elderly tortoise Bert is determined to father more offspring. But it’s a very, very, very s-l-o-w process.

Documentary capturing the behaviour of the animals at Chester Zoo. An outbreak of disease in the penguin colony leaves chick Munch fighting for his life. Sulawesi macaque Lisa gives birth and dad Mamassa is providing pretty useless, so older brother Beaker steps in to help with the babysitting. Andean spectacled bear Bernie is determined to woo Lima when she enters her short window of fertility, and young male tortoise Football muscles in on 71-year-old Bert's harem of females.
