Review

For some of the five-year-olds at the play centre, this is the first time they’ve encountered a child in a wheelchair. Daisy, who wants to be a secretary when she grows up, has cerebral palsy and it’s fascinating, and sometimes moving, seeing how her peers make sense of her disability. As the psychologist points out, understanding other people’s differences is something many adults still struggle with.

And when the children are given life-like crying dolls to care for, things get really interesting. Showing absolutely no signs of modern masculinity, the boys drop the dolls on the floor and run off, leaving the girls to soothe the babies. “I really, really wish we were with another man,” says an exasperated Ellie-Mae. Hey, we’ve all been there.

Summary

Ten new five-year-olds arrive at the play centre and cameras follow their progress as they assert their independence and become interested in exploring the world. Confident Jude quickly takes on a dominant role within the group, and it's not long before romance starts to blossom between him and Ellie.
