When he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne would use these parliamentary occasions to flex his financial muscles and lift Tory bankbenchers’ spirits with the odd rabbit-from-a-hat announcement.

Philip Hammond isn’t that type, but then he’s got Brexit to wrestle with, which should still make his first report to the House of Commons on the latest economic forecasts and the state of public finances a lively watch.

Presenter Andrew Neil will do his best to read the political messages – or warnings – buried in the bean counting, and whether it forbodes bigger debts or smaller, more austerity or less.
