Kryten is three million years through his six-million-year life cycle, meaning that the lovable mechanoid is having a midlife crisis (or “Krysis” as the episode puts it). For humans, this state of affairs might result in the buying of a flash car or expensive sports gear, for Kryten, it means he’s opted for a brand-new crimson outer shell complete with subwoofers. Cue some attempts by the crew to boost Kryten’s ego that backfire spectacularly (particularly when Kryten comes face to face with a mech that’s more into writing novels than shopping lists) and a meeting with a sentient embodiment of the universe. Yes, it’s all going a bit Douglas Adams, although not even he envisaged the universe sounding quite like Morgan Freeman.
