If you’ve been watching BBC2 this week, you may have seen Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS colleagues undertake a truly alternative experience in the hunt for “wellness” in Thailand on The Retreat. Now they’re on slightly more familiar ground as they head to Derby to help out a deserving family.
Rachel and Andy Smith’s middle son Isaac has spastic quadriplegia, which means the three-year-old needs care round the clock. This has knock-on effects on the whole family – Isaac has two sisters – as their house is simply not designed for anyone’s practical needs. What they really need is more space, creating a home – and garden – that works for everyone.
Nick Knowles travels to Derby to meet Rachel and Andy Smith, whose middle child Isaac has a severe form of cerebral palsy. The couple must be available at all times because Isaac sleeps in a hospital bed in the living room, but this is making life difficult for his siblings as their home design is in conflict with what the family really need. Having heard of their plight, the DIY SOS team arrives to help, backed up by an army of local tradespeople - with designer Julia Kendall making sure they do not stray too far from her vision.
