Review

Not long ago Michael Mosley presented a Horizon programme on the risks of eating meat and concluded that the science was far from settled, although the research did suggest that limiting how much processed meat (bacon, sausages, ham) we eat made good, healthy sense.

But that was 2014. Has the science moved on? Or will presenter Chris Bavin, a “greengrocer by trade and carnivore by nature”, reach a different conclusion? For this probing one-off he tracks 40 volunteers on a study to find out how much meat-eating is good for us; tests whether paying more for chicken makes it any healthier; and discovers a way to dramatically reduce the health risks of processed meat.

Summary

Greengrocer Chris Bavin sets out to find out whether certain claims about meat, linking it to cancer and heart disease, are justified. With the help of a team of scientists, he follows 40 volunteers on a study to find out whether there are any potential dangers, tests whether paying more for chicken makes it any better, and discovers a way to dramatically reduce the health risks associated with processed meats. Plus, an unlikely lean super-meat that will not break the bank.
