The middle chapter of Grant’s love letter to this revered film studio centres on the golden era – specifically 1949, when there were nearly 1.5 billion UK cinema admissions.
It celebrates back-room heroes like cinematographer Douglas Slocombe and writer “Tibby” Clarke, and the “malicious Englishness” of Kind Hearts and Coronets (shown at 8pm).
Skip the spoiler-laden movie synopses if you’ve yet to treat yourself to any Ealing classics, but the insight and A-list input are terrific. Guests this week include a mischievous Carrie Fisher, Peter Capaldi (excellent on film – remember fabulous docu-spoof The Cricklewood Greats?) and the lovely Michael Palin, with a slightly upsetting moustache.
Carrie Fisher, Peter Capaldi, Reece Shearsmith, Celia Imrie, Mike Leigh and Diana Rigg join the host to discuss The Lavender Hill Mob, Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Man in The White Suit, comedy films the gave Ealing its rightful place in British comedy history.
