Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla – her name may not yet trip off the tongue but she’s a rising star to follow. Only 30, the Lithuanian conductor has won all sorts of plaudits in the past few years and here makes her Proms debut as music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (a post previously held by Simon Rattle and Sakari Oramo).
The programme starts with the overture to Mozart’s Magic Flute. But don’t go expecting Papageno and the Queen of the Night, because we then segue into a new-ish work by Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen, Let Me Tell You, a musical treatment of the words of Ophelia for Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony rounds off a pleasant-sounding concert.
A concert by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, featuring Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute, and a new piece by Hans Abrahamsen.
