The Cars That Made Britain Great

The Cars That Made Britain Great

Series 1 - Episode 1

There’s a moment that sums up this classic-car clip show: Vicki Butler Henderson is taking an Austin Healey 3000 MkIII for a spin on the open road and as she drives along she makes a sort of miaowing, moaning sound of pure pleasure. That’s ths gist of the whole programme – a sigh of delight from various celebrity contributors as they recall great British bangers gone by.

And you can’t help but share their enjoyment as we revel in the curves of a DB5 (James Bond drove one, you know) or bemoan the mechanical failings of a Triumph Stag – we’re reliably informed its V8 was essentially two Dolomite engines sellotaped together. The cars are, as Vicki would have it, “a hoot” but so are some of the unlikely interviewees. I never thought I’d see John Prescott wax lyrical about a Lotus.

Rufus Hound chronicles Great Britain's motoring history and celebrates the classic cars of yesteryear, from the Aston Martin DB5 to the Mini. In the first edition, the search is on for the quintessential flashy British car, with Vicki Butler-Henderson making the case for the Austin Healey 3000. Meanwhile, Shane Lynch tries to make a Rolls Royce drift, and a racing driver puts an MGB through its paces at Snetterton Race Circuit.
