This isn’t just a great documentary about grassroots football, it’s terrific TV full stop. Even if you haven’t followed the fortunes of Salford City and their celebrity owners before now, join at this point because the climax of the 2015-16 season – artfully interleaved with the build-up to manager Bernard’s wedding – is a great story.
As the club’s season goes badly wrong (“The wheels have fell off,” mutters the manager’s mum) there are funny and touching scenes with the characters we’ve come to know and love, including more of those volcanic half-time lectures from Bernard.
Meanwhile, luckless striker Gaz Seddon hires a mind coach to boost his confidence. Phil Neville has problems on the school run. And there’s a lovely sequence as Bernard and his macho mates try to learn a dance routine for the wedding. For fiancée Jema and everyone else, it will count for little if Salford don’t win promotion…
Salford City FC continue their quest for promotion from the Northern Premier League Premier Division during the 2015/16 season, with the managers attempting to reverse a poor run of form following an ill-fated trip to Ilkeston, that seemingly leaves their hopes in tatters. Meanwhile, two of the clubs famous owners - Gary and Phil Neville - are experiencing a tough time of their own at Spanish La Liga outfit Valencia, where Phil is working as a coach, and Gary is appointed as manager midway through the campaign.
