In part two of Daisy Goodwin’s lush costume drama, young
(Jenna Coleman) feels isolated and lonely. She clearly has a crush on her prime minister, Lord Melbourne (played by Rufus Sewell, so why wouldn’t she have a crush on him?) But he suffers a hard parliamentary blow and wants to resign.
There are Downton-esque scenes with fictional below-stairs characters that tend to get in the way (there’s even a wicked Machiavellian Thomas Barrow butler-type baddie) when really, we want to stay upstairs, with the Duke of Wellington (Peter Bowles) and Peter Firth as the wicked Duke of Cumberland.
As for young Victoria – it’s her 19th birthday, but her party is spoiled by unwelcome guests.
As Lord Melbourne's popularity in the house wanes, the Tories eagerly await their imminent triumph, while the Duke of Cumberland views it as a chance to prey on his niece's vulnerability and establish a co-regency with the Duchess of Kent and Conroy. Victoria is devastated when Melbourne regretfully announces he is stepping down and even more bewildered that she must ask complete stranger Sir Robert Peel to form a government, and she desperately implores Melbourne to return. Period drama, starring Jenna Colman and Rufus Sewell.
