It’s worth putting up with the fruity American voiceover of this profile for the sake of some extraordinary contributors. Among those lining up to characterise the Queen for us are George Bush senior (“She’s a warm human being”), John Major (“a very strong sense of duty”) and, for some reason, actor Ben Kingsley (“a steadfastness, but also a kindness”).

Between them and well-shuffled archive footage, we canter through the familiar story of the abdication crisis that made Princess Elizabeth heir to the throne, her controversial marriage, the coronation, and how her years on the throne have seen Britain and the Commonwealth evolve.

A look at the life of Elizabeth II, from her youth to her father's coronation as George VI after Edward ViII's abdication, her own sudden ascension to the throne and long reign.
