Rachel Nickell - The Untold Story

Rachel Nickell: The Untold Story

The murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common in 1992 appalled the nation. It was a case of the most grotesque and frenzied violence – she was stabbed to death in broad daylight in a park in front of her small son.

Fiona Bruce, who covered the story at the time, presents this look at the case and interviews some of those directly involved in the investigation, which in itself became notorious after a police honeytrap went wrong and led to the subsequent collapse of the trial of the innocent Colin Stagg.

Bruce talks to Stagg, to police officers involved in the inquiry and to legal experts.

Fiona Bruce looks into the murder of Rachel Nickell, the 23-year-old who was killed in front of her infant son on Wimbledon Common in July 1992. It was one of the first major stories that Fiona covered as a junior reporter in the south east of England and she revisits the case, speaking to key figures involved in the case, hearing about the difficulties faced by police officers as they tried to catch Rachel's killer and how a misguided investigation almost led to a murderer going free and an innocent man being sent to prison.
