A welcome return to Elm Heath’s Children’s Services, where sharply observed office banter and grim frontline social care make for more brilliantly nuanced and thought-provoking comedy. Kevin Eldon’s kindly Martin has now been promoted and wants to play things by the book. But when Al (Alan Davies) visits a sex-worker mother, the problems of that approach become obvious.
In many ways our pole star is Jo Brand’s Rose, Al’s world weary but committed fellow traveller. But everyone (even Himesh Patel’s brilliantly idiotic Nitin) is fighting against the tide – whether it’s the constant ringing of phones or the dogmatic virtue-signalling of student Mimi (Lolly Adefope), who is on work placement. Asking the harassed staff to fill in a form about the impact of gender politics on 21st-century feminist social workers suggests she still has a lot to learn.
The topical comedy set at Elm Heath Social Services returns, as the team come under pressure over a single parent sex worker and a case of abuse. Elsewhere, Nat thinks there may be records missing from the newly-digitised files, and Rose struggles to deal with her children, her husband and an incontinent new puppy.
