Death in Paradise rolls back onto our screens like a wave on a golden beach. Not a big, dramatic wave, obviously, but a pleasant ripple of the kind you paddle in.

We’re back on murderous Saint Marie with DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon). In a world where TV detectives are, by default, tortured mavericks, Jack remains blandly likeable and uncomplicated. This week he wrestles manfully with the pain of his daughter going off to university.

Meanwhile, he and the team investigate the just-intriguing-enough case of a billionaire’s fiancée and her fall from a hotel balcony. Did she jump or was she pushed, and if the latter, which of his unprepossessing family might have done it? As Jack remarks, “If you want to know what God thinks of money, look at who he gives it to.”

Summary

New series. After being introduced at the end of the last series, Ardal O'Hanlon returns for his first full series as Detective Inspector Jack Mooney, working on the Caribbean island of Saint Marie, where the sun shines all day and it seems half the residents are killers-in-waiting. The DI and his team are tested when a hotel billionaire's fiancée falls from a balcony the day before her lavish wedding. Everything points to suicide - except for the fact that the victim only painted one fingernail. Danny John-Jules and Josephine Jobert co-star, with guest appearances from Denis Lawson, Elizabeth Berrington and Jemima Rooper.
