Girlfriends

Series 1 - Episode 1

Review

Linda, Sue and Gail have been best friends on and off for years. But as time has ticked on, they’ve grown apart, only to be flung back together again after Linda’s husband vanishes on a cruise.

The three women face the kind of struggles that come with late middle age – failing parents, troublesome adult kids, grandchild-care responsibilities, age discrimination at work. As usual with a Kay Mellor drama, every possible story-strand is here, and many more besides, in a big boiling pot of a drama.

The opening episode is a breathless hurtle through Linda’s (Phyllis Logan), Sue’s (Miranda Richardson) and Gail’s (Zoë Wanamaker) travails. For instance, Sue, the features editor of a bridal magazine in York, is being shoved out by her business partner (and ex-lover) to make room for a younger woman.

None of this is subtle, but you have to hand it to Mellor, she knows how to tell a story. Lots of stories.
