Review

“Such crimes must never be forgotten, nor unpunished.” The brutal opening sequences of this new two-part documentary underscores exactly why some survivors of the Nazi regime spent decades tracking down war criminals. The archive footage here is unsparing, explicit, and makes the stories of later efforts to hamper the work of so-called “Nazi hunters” all the more troubling.

Simon Wiesenthal, a survivor of the concentration camps, became one of the best known of these single-minded investigators. His work, along with husband-and-wife team Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, becomes the main focus of the film. Their stories span 60 years, many continents – and mountains of paperwork.
