Miranda Does Christmas

Review

Here’s an enticing prospect. Christmas is brilliant for kids but can be hard work for grown-ups. Miranda Hart aims to redress the balance with some rosy-cheeked revelry and jolly, tinsel-strewn japes. “Joy to the world” is her message as she sings carols with a guest star, organises a surprise office party and generally raises spirits among shoppers.

It’s a welcome return to TV entertainment – swapping channels since Hart’s BBC1 sitcom took a bow three years ago. We can only hope some of her Miranda pals (Sally “Bear with” Phillips, perhaps, or Patricia “Such fun” Hodge) can join her for the mirth and merriment. But we are promised former Time Lord David Tennant, singer Sam Smith and, to keep Hart in line, Bake Off judge Prue Leith.

There’s also a fairy godmother element, with rewards promised for unsuspecting good-deed-doers and singletons. Sounds like what I call a truly cockle-warming show.
