The title is a bit of a con. This is not one of those series that offers “unprecedented access” behind the scenes. It’s simply (and enjoyably) a flurry of royal gossip over the years, some of it well known (the divisions over the Diana years) , some of it intriguingly absurd. Did Prince Philip really force his mother-in-law out of the building by turning down her central heating?

The first of two documentaries going behind-the-scenes at Buckingham Palace to find out what life is like beyond its grand exterior. The programmes look back at the 60 years since the Queen's Coronation and explores what might happen to the palace when Prince Charles takes the throne. The opening instalment examines the young Queen's ascent to the throne at the age of 25, Philip's extended overseas visit, and the serious security threats in the 1970s. It also explores the battles between Charles and Diana, Anne and Andrew's divorce, and the use of the palace as a royal stage.
