Review

Stuart and Tammy bought a dull, drab, dark 1950s bungalow because it was the only home they could afford in a pretty Sussex village.

But they are tired of their dreary surroundings, so George Clarke brings in controversial architect Will Alsop, who won the 2000 Stirling Prize for the space-age looking library in Peckham, south London. The couple has £50,000 to spend, but learn that work this bold doesn’t come cheap.

Alsop’s plans are radical: a huge-domed, port-holed extension that frightens some neighbours with its otherworldliness. Even Tammy is unsure. “I’m not sold on it,” she says. “Have we done the right thing?”

Summary

Architect Ed Lipton renovates a house for a couple who moved in nine years ago for £220,000, but with two young sons are fast outgrowing the property and cannot afford to move. Ed's bold ideas are held up by planning problems and once the build starts, Rachel and James agree to move out so progress can be quicker, but it has to be completed in just eight weeks. Knocking down the garage and replacing it with a dramatic, double-height extension to give the living space a real sense of drama is one of the potential solutions, although the budget of £60,000 is set to test Ed's skill to the limit.
