Namibia is the first stop on Davina’s tour of the world’s harshest environments. This is a celebrity coo-at-nature show with the odd science bit thrown in, so as well as trying to share the host’s excitement at seeing a cheetah or giraffe close up, we also regularly peep through a thermal imaging camera to study how animals cope in the desert or bush.
McCall might not always have the words to describe the experience – we’re on an incredible, iconic journey where everything is amazing, brilliant and genius – but her willingness, for example, to run barefoot on scorching dunes gets across how extreme the conditions are. And the animals, from a cuddly aardvark to a dancing shovel-snouted lizard, are all telegenic pros.
The TV presenter examines how animals survive in hostile environments by visiting some of the hottest, coldest, deepest and wettest places on Earth to experience life in extreme conditions. She begins in the deserts of Namibia in south-west Africa, and discovers it home to an incredibly diverse range of life despite the high temperatures and lack of water. Davina goes head-to-head in a running race against a cheetah, camps in the sand dunes overnight and stays with San bushpeople to learn the skills that they have developed to survive.
