In a coincidence of scheduling that reflects the nation's all or nothing approach to food and dieting, the day before a group of celebrities immerse themselves in puff pastry and vanilla frosting for the Great Sport Relief Bake Off, another group of (much less well-known) famous faces is coming off the sweet stuff for good. Or that's the idea.
Former Brookside actress Jennifer Ellison and comedian Rory McGrath are among the six sweet-toothed celebrities who will spend the next two weeks milking buffalo and growing vegetables to produce meals that are both self-sufficient and sugar-free. The resident nutritionist speaks of a “promised land” of slimmed waists and renewed energy once their bodies adapt to their new diet, but as Ellison takes to bed with a throbbing headache, it seems a long way off.
Six famous faces undertake a dietary experiment to live without sugar for two weeks, moving into a farm, where they work in return for their share of healthy, wholesome food. James Argent, Tupele Dorgu, Jennifer Ellison, Mark Labbett, Jane McDonald and Rory McGrath must cope without any sugar at all in their diet as they get stuck into jobs on the farm, and an afternoon in the vegetable garden sees Jane and Jennifer take a turn for the worse as the sugar-free detox takes hold. Narrated by Olivia Colman.
