Detective Chief Inspector
Stanhope can seem as soft as a cushion when she calls you “love” or “’pet”, her eyes crinkling kindly as a little half smile plays on her lips.
But we know that Vera is made of crushed velvet and steel; she might seem a sweet, plodding gauche thing to the unwary, but under the ratty, mushy-pea-coloured raincoat, she’s a crime colossus.
In the first of a new series of mysteries a shoeless woman is found dead on the Northumberland moors. It’s a lonely place to die as the wind shrieks in the bracken. But when Vera (Brenda Blethyn) and her little team dig into the victim’s background they find she had a notorious romantic past that made her a cause célèbre and an object of vicious gossip.
It’s a satisfyingly knotty tale of guilt, atonement and deep, stark tragedy.
A body is discovered on the Northumberland moors, and identified as a woman who made a distressed 999 call on the night of her death - suggesting she may have been abducted by someone she knew. Vera takes on the case, and discovers the victim was a controversial figure in her home town, who had a complicated relationship with her family and a number of well-hidden secrets.
