A detached manner, an air of cynicism, an eye open for a decent story. Decent qualities for a war correspondent, but ones you may develop while watching this stately Australian drama about Gallipoli as told through the stories of the journalists who revealed the truth about the ill-fated campaign.
Hugh Dancy is the dashing, brash veteran war correspondent Eliis Ashmead-Bartlett of The Daily Telegraph, Sam Worthington plays the adventurous Australian reporter Phillip Schuler and Joel Jackson is the by-the-book, meticulous official Australian war correspondent Charles Bean.
The cast is rounded out by big names such as Charles Dance, Bryan Brown and Rachel Griffiths, but while the journalists’ battles to circumvent the army censors are diverting, everything is too episodic to be fully involving during a 90-minute drama.
