Review

A cursory glance at Frances de la Tour’s family tree confirms what we suspected: she has posh ancestry. For starters, her four-times great-grandmother (Sophia Delaval) had the title of Honourable. No wonder that when she drives up to a very stately pile in Lincolnshire that once belonged to her family she immediately asks the current owner, “So why isn’t this mine?” The answer is all the drama and scandal in her lineage: adultery (or a “criminal conversation”), illegitimacy, drugs, gambling debts, social ostracism and long-running court cases.

De la Tour is sympathetic but takes the discoveries in her stride. However, an astronomically large apothecary bill really shocks her.

Summary

Actress Frances de la Tour looks into her family, starting out with a tantalising clue that hints she may have aristocratic ancestors. Delving into the history of her three-times great-grandmother, she uncovers the story of a secret lover, an illegitimate child and a landmark divorce case. But the scandal does not stop there and she goes back a further generation, where sure enough she uncovers a tragic story leading her to a historic family residence.
