Review

Oops, BBC2 isn’t wearing any knickers again! After the weary rogerings of the Bloomsbury Group in A Life in Squares there’s oodles of Georgian hanky-panky in this 18th-century sex romp, based on a true story.

Wealthy Lady Seymour Fleming (Natalie Dormer) marries ambitious politician Sir Richard Worsley (Shaun Evans), a pervert and voyeur who can get his rocks off only by watching her through their bedroom keyhole having sex with other men.

Because Seymour is his “property” she must agree to being used in this outrageous way – until she falls properly in love with a handsome neighbour, George Bisset (Aneurin Barnard), while a persistent cello swoops on the soundtrack. Then the trouble really begins as everyone becomes enmeshed in a scandalous court case.

It’s very handsomely staged and has the feel of a Peter Greenaway film, but it’s all a bit empty. And someone, please, silence that flipping cello.

Summary

Game of Thrones and Hunger Games star Natalie Dormer leads the cast in this fact-based drama about the scandalous life of Lady Worsley, an 18th-century noblewoman who dared to leave her husband and elope with his best friend, Captain George Bisset. As a result, she finds herself at the centre of a very public trial as the powerful Sir Richard Worsley seeks compensation from her lover - so she takes the decision to expose the truth about her marriage and the affair. With Shaun Evans (Endeavour) and Aneurin Barnard (Cilla).
