Review

Stacey Dooley is like a younger, more attractive Ross Kemp; meeting armed men in the world’s trouble spots. Here she steps into the middle of a Mexican stand-off between drug cartels, police and vigilantes fed up with their friends and families being kidnapped and murdered.

The wider story is the explosion of methamphetamine production in Mexico and how it’s helping the cartels retrench their power. But it’s on a personal level that Dooley excels and she’s visibly shaken by the brutal violence; personified by a hitman who finds murder as easy as buying something from a shop. But it’s the distraught relatives of a slaughtered family who are most heartbreaking.

Summary

New series. The journalist heads to remote and hostile regions to meet producers and traffickers involved in the global drugs market, beginning with a trip to Mexico, where she finds out about the lucrative trade in crystal meth. Stacey joins the army as they close down `super labs' that have been appearing across the country, and hears about cartel brutality from the families of their victims. Plus, how some communities have set up their own vigilante groups to try to fight off the drug-supplying gangs.
