Review

Monica Galetti, MasterChef: the Professionals judge and Le Gavroche chef, isn’t looking for recipe tips in the Jura mountains, one of France’s lesser-known culinary destinations. She knows how to cook stuff. Witnessing exactly where the ingredients come from, however, is a profound learning process.

Much of her visit is a hymn to the Appellation d’origine contrôlée system, which protects the artisans whose aged skills give us wine and cheese that mass production cannot match. We even meet the guy who collects spruce shavings to wrap around Mont d’Or cheese. Galetti, a humble and serious-minded presenter, finds her deep respect for the finest food goes to a new level when she goes hunting for wild boar in a visceral, emotional sequence.

Summary

The MasterChef: The Professionals judge embarks on a culinary road trip through the Jura region of eastern France, spending time with the area's food producers to see how their passion translates into world-class ingredients. She joins a boar hunt and faces up to the responsibility of eating meat, learns the secret of making some of the UK's favourite French cheeses and discovers an ancient profession she never knew existed. Finally, on the slopes of Mont d'Or, Monica prepares a rustic feast using produce she gathered herself.
