Arthur & George

Arthur & George

Series 1 - Episode 3

Yes, it would be outlandish for ITV to make further episodes of this detective drama. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have to charge about Edwardian England solving mysteries a scriptwriter has made up! But as the story of the real Doyle righting a miscarriage of justice ends, it’s a wrench to abandon so many likeable characters: Martin Clunes as the stoutly compassionate Doyle; Charles Edwards as his witty sidekick Woodie; Hattie Morahan sharp and sparky as Doyle’s great love Jean Leckie. They’re a gang I wish I could hang out with more.

Another fine performance comes from Arsher Ali as George Edalji, a framed man who remains quietly dignified as Doyle finds out who destroyed his life.

Determined to prove his critics wrong and find out whether George has been hiding anything, Arthur attacks the case with renewed fervour, uncovering fresh evidence that suggests a very different explanation to the one found by the police. However, he and Woodie are led into further danger when it seems the Wyrley Ripper is still at large. On a mission that could expose corruption in the establishment, will Arthur be able to show the world that the young solicitor is innocent? Martin Clunes stars in the period drama.
