The Great Comic Relief Bake Off

The Great Comic Relief Bake Off

Series 2 - Episode 1

Monday 7pm - 8pm Really

With the exception of Dame Edna Everage, this first batch of celebrity bakers has a look of sheer terror on their faces throughout this. But they don’t do badly. Or is Lulu, the most serious of them all, correct when she wonders, “Are they just being nice to me?” Joanna Lumley is thinking along the same lines. She reckons they’re kind because “they’ve noticed I’m quite old”.

It’s cruel but you’ll roar with laughter at the mishaps. And there are many. Dame Edna’s giant cookie has to be cut out of the tin with secateurs. When they get to the technical challenge, Paul Hollywood’s reluctant even to taste one “informal” offering although, as always, Mary Berry is kindness personified. And although the general idea of Bake Off is to avoid producing anything with a soggy bottom, Jennifer Saunders flouts the rules by making a cake in the shape of a soggy-bottomed bed. Hilarious.

Celebrity edition of the baking show being broadcast in the run-up to this year's Comic Relief, in which each week a quartet of famous faces enter the tent to demonstrate their baking skills - or not, as the case may be. Sue Perkins hosts the first programme, which sees Dame Edna Everage, Lulu, Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders taking on three challenges - a giant biscuit, 12 fruit tarts and a show-stopping tiered chocolate cake - with judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood deciding who deserves to win the Star Baker apron.
